Lau Hawaiian Collective’s inaugural project was a celebration of Hawaiian chants, hulas, and contemporary songs on the theme of wai (fresh water); a project funded in part by the Minnesota Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund in 2011. We performed this interactive concert 19 times between 2011 and 2012 in outdoor and indoor venues Minneapolis, St. Paul, and Madison, Wisconsin. In 2012, we collaborated with Hamline University’s Center for Global Environmental Education (CGEE) in creating a multimedia concert celebrating the release of our CD, Wai, and CGEE’s Waters to the Sea program. We have served as teaching artists with COMPAS since 2012, and we continue to grow and learn in our roles as teaching artists and performers through our work with communities in Minnesota.
